Magnesium and sleep: a small signal, real limits.

Sleep claims are common on supplement pages. The research we reviewed is narrower than those claims, and it does not test or rank the products in our price table.

2021 review: older adults with insomnia

A review found three randomised trials involving 151 older adults. Pooled results suggested about 17 minutes less time to fall asleep, while total sleep time did not show a statistically clear change. The authors rated the evidence low to very low quality and the trials at moderate to high risk of bias.

2025 trial: adults reporting poor sleep

A four-week placebo-controlled trial enrolled 155 adults aged 18 to 65. The magnesium bisglycinate group had a slightly greater reduction in insomnia severity than placebo; the reported effect was small. Other psychological outcomes did not clearly differ. It did not compare shop products.

What is still uncertain

The trial authors called for longer studies and objective sleep measures. These results cannot establish that a particular product, form or dose will improve sleep for everyone. An NIH centre has also described the wider insomnia evidence as limited.

How this relates to the comparison.

A product name that contains “sleep” is still just a product name in our comparison. No sleep score or product recommendation is derived from these studies.
